(1898 - 1975) American Army general who held Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge, remembered for his reply to a German surrender ultimatum, 'Nuts!' Lot of three T.L.S.s 'Tony' on his corporate letterhead, each 1p. 4to., New York, 1959-62, to Dr. Gilbert Darlington, an Episcopal clergyman who was the retired treasurer, publications director and investment officer of the American Bible Society. Some good content, in part: '...I found at home, to my great pleasure, your letter in which you tell me you are sending a prepublication copy of 'The Longest Day'. I have already read with great interest the condensations...I look forward with anticipation to reading the whole book...I was delighted to receive the book about Tibet written by the impressive gentleman who sat next to me at the Ends of the Earth dinner...The fallout shelted biscuits came through in fine shape...I must say they are very good, although I hope the day never arrives when we shall have need to use them...New York State is far ahead of the rest of the country in their preparation...'
