ANNA LOUISE STRONG
(1885-1970) Political activist and writer who was a twentieth-century "small C" communist American journalist. Following World War II, she was arrested in Moscow and charged by the Soviets with espionage, and settled permanently in China. During that time, she fostered a close relationship with Chou En-lai and was on familiar terms with Mao Zedong. Rare I.S.P. 6" x 4" b/w, showing her in old age with her Chinese secretary. Inscribed on the verso in red ink: "Taken summer 1963 at Peitaiho. With regards Anna Louise Strong Dec. 11 1963. Here is the photo you wanted. I have others more like portraits, but none that convey the charm and Sanity of China as this of my secretary Chao Feng-feng & myself". Light smudging in spots, otherwise very good condition.
