Description:

ANGLO-EGYPTIAN WAR OF 1882
Lot of two photographs of members of the International Committee in Egyptian Claims, each 26" x 19", showing the various international delegates gathered in Alexandria in 1885 to discuss payments the Egyptians would be forced to make for destruction caused by shelling by British vessels offshore. The shelling, in all likelihood, was undertaken to solidify British presence in Egypt, rather than to put down "anarchy" as the British claimed. It would be another fifty years before the British fully withdrew from Egypt. The photos are slightly faded, mounts are spotted and stained, with one mount bearing a tear right to the edge of the photo. Printed results of the conference are also present: Egypt was required to pay foreigners 107 million francs, an astronomical sum which kept the country bankrupt for decades.
