Description:

ANDREW JOHNSON
(1808-1875) Seventeenth President of the United States who came to office following the death of Abraham Lincoln. A squabble with Stanton along with his Reconstruction policies led to an impeachment by Congress. Excessively rare S.P. "Andrew Johnson" as President, 5 1/2" x 7 1/2" (sight), sepia toned, an oval portrait of Johnson by Matthew Brady showing him in a distinguished chest-up pose, signed in blue ink at bottom. This image was taken by Brady while Johnson was serving as President, and is now set into an oval matt which is in turn laid into an ornate gilt-trimmed period frame. Fine condition. Originally offered by University Archives in their 1994 catalog, item 59, sold with a copy of that catalog. Signed photos of Johnson as president are near non-existent.
