Description:

ANDREW JOHNSON
(1808 - 1875) Seventeenth President of the United States following the death of Abraham Lincoln, his Reconstruction policies led to his impeachment by Congress. Rare partly-printed D.S. 1p. folio, Washington, April 27, 1865, a military commission signed just 12 days after Lincoln's death, in which Johnson appoints John Craig as "...Military Storekeeper in the Quartermaster's Department..." of the U.S. Army. While the appointment is dated Jan. 31, 1865, it was not signed until Apr. 27, possibly having been in the queue for Lincoln's signature. Ironically, a passage in the document states that the holder should follow orders from "me" (that is, the president) "or the future President of the United States". With a large vignette of an American eagle at top, and a very large vignette at the bottom showing American flags, cannon, a drum and so on. A few folds and one tiny hole affecting nothing, a light water stain in one corner, otherwise very good condition, and a fine item for display.
