Description:

ANDREW JACKSON
(1767-1845) Seventh President of the United States, "Old Hickory" became a national hero in his defense of New Orleans and as president encouraged Western expansion and paid off the national debt. Fine partly-printed D.S. as President, 1p. folio vellum, Washington, July 1, 1835, a military promotion of Alexander R. Thompson to "...Major of the Sixth Regiment of Infantry...". Thompson would be killed in action just two years later during the Florida War against the Seminoles, 1837. According to our consignor, a noted North American dealer, the official report of his death reads: "Although he received two balls from the fire of the enemy early in the action, which wounded him severely, yet he appeared to disregard them, and continued to give his orders with the same coolness that he would have done had his regiment been under review...Advancing, he received his third ball, which at once deprived him of life. His last words were 'Keep steady, men; charge the hammock - remember the regiment to which you belong'". Countersigned by LEWIS CASS as Secretary of War. Usual folds bearing light toning and foxing at middle, very good condition.
