Description:

ANDREW JACKSON
(1767-1845) Seventh President of the United States, "Old Hickory" became a national hero in his defense of New Orleans and as president encouraged Western expansion and paid off the national debt. Rare, good content A.L.S. "Andrew Jackson" as President to his Secretary of War, Lewis Cass, 1p. large 8vo., [Washington], Oct. 24, 1833. In part: "...I have reflected on the subject you submitted to me...as it relates to Dr. Thomas...from the confidence reposed in Dr. Thomas here, it would produce a good effect to have him stationed in this city for a while at least, if it can be done in justice to others - & it would have a good effect in doing away the prevailing idea of the favoritism of the Surgeon-Genl, which now exists...". Very good. The Office of Surgeon General, as we know it, did not come into being until John M. Woodworth was appointed by U. S. Grant in 1871. Here, Jackson refers to the Surgeon General of the Army, Joseph Lovell, over whom Cass would have presided. The claim of "favoritism" likely arose following Lovell's order that all assistant surgeons would have to pass a medical board's examination before being accepted; no doubt those who were rejected started such rumors.
