Description:

(1767 - 1845) Seventh President of the United States, "Old Hickory" became a national hero in his defense of New Orleans and as president encouraged Western expansion and paid off the national debt. JACKSON HOPES TO SETTLE THE "PETTICOAT AFFAIR" ROCKING HIS CABINET Rare, fine content A.L.S. signed "The President" twice in the text, with integral address leaf), 1p. 8vo., [Washington], Jan. 26, 1830 to his Secretary of the Navy, JOHN BRANCH (1782-1863). In part: "...The President with his respects to Govr. Branch has the pleasure to inform him that he has seen Major Eaton & he has authorized the president to say to him that he will with pleasure have a friendly interview with Govr. Branch in the presence of Major Barry whenever it may suit Govr. Branch...The P. communicates this with much pleasure as he hopes all misunderstandings will be explained..." William T. Barry was Postmaster General in Andrew Jackson's administration from 1829 to 1835. He was the only member of Jackson's original cabinet not to resign as a result of the Petticoat Affair, which involved the social ostracism of Margaret O'Neill Eaton, the wife of Secretary of War John H. Eaton, also mentioned in this letter. The trouble was incited by a coalition of Cabinet members' wives led by Second Lady Floride Calhoun. Barry, like Jackson, had sided with the Eatons. However, Jackson's letter to Branch failed to sway the North Carolinian - he too would resign Jackson's cabinet the following year.
