Description:

ANDREW JACKSON
Fine partly printed D.S., 1p., vellum folio, Washington, Mar. 12, 1836, a patent to John Ames of Springfield, MA for improvements "in the Boiler for the generating of steam to be used in the drying of paper...". Ames had made several previous forays into paper technology, having famously sued Houghton & Johnson in the paper machine trial of 1828. Ames' paper-drying boiler patent took the steam process and created more of it for drying, as opposed to concentrated power in an engine. Signed "Andrew Jackson" with one of the largest, boldest examples we've seen, and countersigned by JOHN FORSYTH as Secretary of State and BENJAMIN BUTLER as Attorney General. Embossed eagle-vignette seal and yellow silk ties remain. Folded, with moderate soiling at top and bottom border and slight foxing in the folds. A diagram and text pertaining to the invention are also included. This patent was one of the last signed by a President before the creation of the Patent Office on July 4, 1836; government copies of the patent are presumed lost in a December 15, 1836 fire.
