199. ANDERSONVILLE SKELETON PHOTO A poignant ca. 1868 cabinet card known as "The Skeleton Photo". This image shows the wretched condition of Private Epperitus Washington McIntosh, Co. A, 14th Illinois Volunteers upon being paroled from Andersonville. His full military record appears in the verso and reads, in small part: "...taken from a tintype that was taken by a citizen of Vicksburg...[on] March 28, 1865. It was shown at the trial of [Andersonville Commandant Henry] Wirtz...the one supporting him is a Hospital nurse...he enlisted...April 28, 61...was through 22 battles; wounded 5 times and was captured at Ackworth, Georgia [June 3-4, 1864]...the skeleton shows the average condition of prisoners coming out of prison...he was covered with scurvy sores...[and] was a mental and physical wreck and suffers from its effects to-day...he was on the Sultana Steamer when she blew up on the 27th day of April 1865...was rescued by two colored men after being 14 hours in the water...if you buy a photo you will help spread loyalty and teach the youth...to love the soldier and flag...".
