Description:

(ANDERSONVILLE) JOHN H. WINDER AND W. SIDNEY WINDER
A very rare association of notorious names, the commander of the hideous Confederate POW camp at Andersonville, Ga., John H. Winder, signing a document with the man who determined the location for the camp, his son W. Sidney Winder. Both appear on the verso of a letter by JOSIAH A. P. CAMPBELL (1830–1917), President pro tempore of the Provisional Congress of the Confederate States, written on C.S.A. War Department letterhead, 1p. 4to., Richmond, Mar. 18, 1863. Campbell asks that the names of all 'citizens of Virginia held as prisoners in Salisbury N.C.' along with specifics of charges against them, etc. be forwarded, especially concerning one 'C. A. J. Collins'. On the verso appears and A.E.S. of AAG W. SIDNEY WINDER, son of CSA Gen. John Winder. Promoted from 1st Lieutenant to Captain and Assistant Adjutant General, he eventually served on his father's staff and was sent to Georgia to scout locations for prisoner of war camps. It was 'Sidney' who chose the location for the future Andersonville POW camp. His March 19th endorsement asks that a captain forward the requested information, signing his last name a second time. Beneath appears a signed endorsement of JOHN H. WINDER (1800-1865), Confederate brigadier general and commander of the Confederate Libby Prison, Belle Isle and the notorious prison at Andersonville. He escaped the hangman, dying just before war's end. On March 30th, Winder sends the list along with the requested additional information. At bottom he adds a second signed endorsement on April 3rd advising: '...these men with exception of Collins have been sent North...' Expertly inlaid, in near fine condition.
