Description:

"ANCIENT CUSTOMS OF JAPAN" WOODBLOCK PRINTS (BY UCHIDA)
Complete set of four Japanese woodblock prints, each 10 3/4" x 16" and mounted in a 13 3/4" x 19" mat, by KIN-U TAKESHITAand printed by the Uchida company of Kyoto, circa 1950. Each finely executed and colored print depicts a particular custom of pre-modern Japan. The customs depicted in this set, the first of three following the same theme, include a chrysanthemum festival, hunting with falcons, playing a game similar to soccer, and waiting for the full moon. The set is contained in a printed paper folder, with the title printed in kanji on the front cover. Each print bears the artist's printed signature, as well as a number on the verso which corresponds to a key located inside the back cover of the folder, giving the title of each scene. The verso of each print also bears a black ink "SAMPLE" stamp. These prints were salesman's samples acquired by a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, Thomas Hood, who sold these prints in the eastern United States on behalf of Uchida. These are excellent examples of "Shin hanga" prints, which were produced under the direction of publishers such as Uchida specifically to appeal to Western tastes and romantic ideas about Japan. Some minor toning and tears to the mounts, and some chipping and tears to the paper folder, else very good.
