Description:

AN AMERICAN WITNESSES HITLER ON THE DAY HE BECOMES CHANCELLOR
Fine content T.L.S. "Al" by an unknown American traveler on his "A.S.B." monogram letterhead, 2pp. 4to., Berlin, [n.d., ca. Feb., 1933] describing events on the day Adold Hitler was named chancellor by Hindenburg, Jan. 30, 1933. Excellent content, in small part: "...I must write and tell you about it, for I was in the crowd the night he became Chancellor. The excitement began at the Kaiserhof...and spread throughout the entire Wilhelm Platz, and down Hindenburg''s street. The crowd was, of course, very large...laughing and shouting and jostling each other. Hitler stood at one of the windows, with a huge spotlight behind him outlining his face, and lighting the people on the street below. It struck me as a dangerous idea, for should anyone have wished to shoot him they could hardly have missed. He saluted over and over again, and each time the mob would respond. In the street below passed all the Nazi troops, carrying flaming torches and banners, and singing songs. It was immensely colorful, and really very exciting! They threw bouquets of mimosa up to him, which he caught and threw down again...greeted by still more cheers...almost a musical comedy touch...The ordinary people...seem to be well pleased; but the foreigners, newspapermen, etc. say that Hitler is a man of slight intelligence, and has achieved his high station, by the force of his enormous magnetic personality, and the power he has of making fanatics out of his followers. The jews and communists are of course ardently against him, and these latter will undoubtedly give him trouble before long...". Very good to fine.
