Description:

Unusual and rare partly-printed D.S., 1p. folio, Berlin, Sep. 20, 1938, an award certificate granting the "Verdienstkreuz des Ordens vom Deutschen Adler, Erste Stufe" ("Order of the German Eagle, First Class") to German-born American Professor of Political Science Frederick K. Krueger of Wittenberg College at Springfield, Ohio. The certificate bears the printed signature of Adolf Hitler at the conclusion, countersigned by Reichsminister and Minister of the Presidential Chancellory OTTO MEISSNER (1880-1953) in black ink at bottom right. A blind-embossed seal depicting a wreathed national eagle and swastika has been applied at bottom left, and the certificate is housed in its original presentation folder, featuring a gilt national eagle and swastika at front center. The certificate and folder both show slight folds to the corners and very slight foxing, else very good to fine. The Order of the German Eagle was an honorary award granted to prominent foreigners, predominately diplomats and foreign leaders, who were considered sympathetic to or actively promoted the NSDAP abroad. Very few Americans received this award in its various classes, including Henry Ford, Charles Lindbergh, and IBM chairman Thomas J. Watson. Professor Krueger appears to have received the Order due to his membership in the "League for Germanism Abroad", which undertook efforts in the U.S. in concert with the NSDAP and the German-American Bund to spread pro-Nazi ideology and propaganda among Americans of German origin, prior to the outbreak of World War II.
