Description:

AN AMERICAN DESCRIBES RESTORATION FRANCE
A.L.S. in an unknown hand, 3pp. + integral address leaf, Paris, June 2, 1818 addressed to "Mrs. John Joy" in Boston. The correspondent Mrs. Joy's son, writes in part: "...the public walks are extremely beautiful and you can form no conception of the gaiety of the scene, the only chase of the Parisians seems to be in pursuit of pleasure whether they catch her or not, is somewhat doubtful, they laugh & dance & sing but whether they feel or not is another question. They seem to me with all this outward jollity to feel themselves a degraded people. They have a king forced upon them & a large army to maintain to keep him on the throne and they have lost a many whom you would not wonder at their adoring if you could see the beautiful & magnificent works which he has completed & those begun by him...everything you see reminds you of his greatness, & one cannot help lamenting that a man of such stupendous power capable of such grand conceptions, should not have been able to have restrained his ambition within proper bounds, had this been the case Paris wd have been the world everything of art & beauty were concentrated and the genius of fine taste of the Emperor was continually adding to its beauties, & its wonder; the present king is the most popular of the Royal family, they feel his goodness & pity him but when he dies I should not be at all surprised if they sh'd kick up a row in travelling thro France there seems to be a feeling of desolation everything remains at a stand, no repairs are made, everything seems to be waiting if I may so express myself for some event, which is expected to take place, it seems to me as if every man which prevented him from lavishing anymore upon it than is absolutely necessary for the purposes of comfort... ". Heavy folds some with partial separations, losses to third page affecting text, light soiling, else very good condition.
