18A. AMHERST, JEFFERY (1717 - 1797) British Major General who captured Louisbourg from the French in 1758. Served as Governor General of British North America but left the office due to Pontiac's Rebellion and later served as colonial Governor of Virginia. Fine association A.L.S. "Amherst", 2pp. 4to., "Grafton Street" [London?], July 12, 1788 to Horation Sharpe (1718-1790), ex-Governor of Maryland, Royal Commander in Chief of all British Forces and commander of colonial forces for the protection of Virginia and adjoining Colonies until 1755. Amherst mentions receiving Sharpes' letter and speaking to Gen. Conway, adding: "...we have great reason to complain of Joshua Sharpes negligence in our Affairs, of the great expense we are put to, without having the least information of it...we concluded we owed him nothing...I called on Mr. Joshua Sharpe often, but could never get any Account...the unaccountable delay is a very serious consequence to General Conway and myself..." Some show-through of the boldly-written text, else very good. Joshua Sharpe, called "The Honest Lawyer", was Horatio's brother. The reason for this dispute is unknown to us.
