Description:

AMERICANS WARNED TO FLEE GERMANY
Printed letter (unsigned), 1p. 4to., Aug. 25, 1939, from Samuel W. Honaker, U.S. Consul General Stuttgart, Germany to Eugene Kessler warning him to leave Germany. In part: "Second Letter. AMERICAN CONSULATE…The American Embassy at Berlin is advising American citizens to leave Germany without delay and this Consulate is giving similar advice to you. If for some reason you should not be able to leave…please advise this office…of your current address…furnish the name address of any relative in the United States whom you might wish to be informed in case of extreme emergency…". Stapled to another printed letter from Honaker, 1p, also dated Aug 25, 1939, folio, to Kessler in Bad Kissingen. In part, "…the present political situation is very grave. While the Consulate is not in position to give…official advice on this subject , it is believed that [American] citizens might find it practicable to leave without delay. If property should be abandoned by American nationals…a careful inventory should be made…should be witnessed by other American nationals…bring…to local authorities, with the request that the property be protected. Two signed copies…should be sent to the Consulate…". Both letters are dated just two days after Germany and the Soviet Union signed a nonaggression agreement, making World War II inevitable. Just six days later, Germany invaded Poland. Folds and some weakness at same, light toning.
