Good lot of five signed items, each executed by an American writer or poet of the nineteenth century, includes: JOHN BURROUGHS (1837-1921) American naturalist and nature essayist, active in the U.S. conservation movement. A.N.S. "J. Burroughs", 1p. oblong 12mo., West Park, May 15, [1903], notifying his unnamed correspondent that his upcoming book will be published in October. The note bears two postal franks, and shows minor toning, else very good. WITH: LIZETTE WOODWORTH REESE (1856-1935) American poet and teacher, best known for her sonnets. Autograph D.S., 1p. oblong 8vo., [n.d., n.p.], a poem entitled "A Good Deed", in full: "A good deed knows no age nor winding-sheet; The centuries find and leave it quick and sweet; Even the miser is remembered, By that one time he gave the beggar bread." Reese signs at the conclusion in violet ink. The poem is mounted to a card backing beneath a b/w photo portrait of the poet. The poem shows a 1" vertical tear at the top edge, with slight foxing, else very good. WITH: RICHARD H. STODDARD (1825-1903) American critic and poet. A.N.S. "R.H. Stoddard", 1p. 12mo., [n.p.], March 19, 1899, transmitting a book to his correspondent. Stoddard signs at the conclusion in black ink. The note is affixed to a card backing, beneath a b/w group portrait of Stoddard with his wife and son. Shows mailing folds with slight chips to the edges, else very good. WITH: BAYARD TAYLOR (1825-1878) American poet, literary critic, translator, travel author, and diplomat. Signature in black ink on a 4" x 2" card, adding the date "May, 1876". The card is affixed to a card backing, beneath a portrait engraving of the writer. Very good. WITH: AGNES REPPLIER (1858-1950) American essayist, best known for her contributions to "Atlantic Monthly". A.L.S., 1p. 8vo., [n.p.], April 10, 1902, to a Mr. Price. Repplier informs her correspondent that she will be going to Boston the following day, and asks that he visit her in the morning. The letter is mounted to a card backing, adjacent to a b/w photo portrait of the writer. Shows mailing folds, else very good. Five pieces.
