Description:

AMERICAN TRENCH ART (3)
Three better quality pieces of World War II American trench art. Each piece is an ashtray of sorts, about 7 in. tall and constructed on the base of a spent artillery shell. Included is: an example with an upright .50 cal. bullet, the backing being the brass cloverleaf emblem of the 88th Infantry Division. The reverse of the emblem is engraved: '88TH BLUE DEVIL DIVISION M.P. PLATOON SOUVENIR OF ITALY' with a devil's frowning face. Beneath appears the name of the owner, 'Charles H. Schweitzer', and encircling the shell base he has engraved the names of 13 Italian cities through which he and his fellow soldiers had passed. SOLD WITH: a similar ashtray with upright .50 cal. bullet, as well as a third piece, this example displaying an inert grenade at center, loosely supported on a stand and in need of proper attachment. Three pieces.
