Description:

AMERICAN SUBMARINE USS SEAHORSE "KILL" FLAGS
A most unusual set of "kill" flags from the USS SEAHORSE, strung along a sixteen-foot line and which may have been displayed upon or within the submarine, or at one of her bases. There are 18 "kill" flags present in all, all rather crudely sewn to a 3/16" braided cotton line. Each of the flags measures about 7 1/2" x 11", although the size varies slightly between them. Three of the flags are of the design used by the Imperial Japanese Navy, representing warships which the SEAHORSE sent to the bottom, while the balance are Japanese national flags which would represent destroyed commercial or private vessels. The flags appear to have been made at about the same time, therefore this may have replaced a previous such display, or was created for a return to port or other special occasion. The sewing is clumsy and amateurish, what one would expect from something having been theater-made, and the paint appears to be heavy oil paint or "red lead" which may have been kept onboard. Some fraying, creased, overall very good. The number and type of flags present exactly corresponds with the submarine's war record. The USS SEAHORSE was commissioned on March 31, 1943 and undertook eight war patrols, sinking many troop transports and even another submarine.
