Description:

AMERICAN SOLDIER'S PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM OF NEWLY-LIBERATED BUCHENWALD AND MAUTHAUSEN
American soldier's photo album containing about fifty photographs of various scenes at the Buchenwald and Mauthausen concentration camps, all various sizes and subjects. The soldier, Pvt. R. J. LoPresti, sent the photos (and presumably, the album) home to a lady friend in New York. Included is his explanatory T.L.S., 2pp. 8vo., Sep. 14, 1945: "…The pictures tend to show just the way we found the bodies of these men and women before the Germans had time to cremate and bury them. These pictures are only a few of the many rotten scenes we witnessed on entering the camp. There were literally thousands of dead bodies lying around the camp. Many of the living died…at the rate of thirty or forty a day…they couldn't take food any longer…The Nazis knocked the gold teeth out of the victims mouth before killing them…Of the women who had long silky hair, they cut it off to be used for German bomb sights, as cross hairs…The SS man in charge of the camp received ONE DOLLAR for every seventy five people he put to death…". The photos, which also include images from Buchenwald, depict buildings at the camp, piles of bodies, burial pits, liberated prisoners, crematoria, wrecked transport trains, encase, civilians burying the dead, etc. Overall very good.
