Description:

AMERICAN SOLDIER'S DRINKING CUP FROM BASTOGNE
An identified American soldier's aluminum drinking cup from Bastogne, the scene of desperate fighting during the Battle of the Bulge, discovered by a dedicated Dutch collector and 'digger' in August, 1987. The cup with folding handle bears clear evidence of having been dug. It was personalized by its owner, bearing his partial serial number 'S-0723' simply engraved on the front, and his name 'C. P. SWIHART' also applied to the bottom. SOLD WITH: an American rubber gas mask face piece, largely intact but with rusted fittings, recovered at Odeigne (north of Bastogne) in 1982. Odeigne was the scene of a pitched tank battle. These and other pieces from the collector's holdings have toured Europe for decades. With a copy of a flyer used by the collector to advertise a show of his relics in 1981, and they toured again in 1987.
