Description:

AMERICAN SOLDIER PHOTO ALBUMS AND DOCUMENT GROUPING
A great collection of photos and documents belonging to FREDERICK C. CHASE (1909–1972) U.S. army captain, recipient of the Purple Heart for injuries received while fighting in France in 1944. This collection includes 268 b/w photos in all, presented in four photo albums. The first album is pre-war although it does not lack military content as it covers the war games held at Pine Camp military training site in New York, depicting army camps, men working through different maneuvers attempting to capture the ‘enemy', marching, medical vehicle convoys, and more. The album also contains newspaper clippings on the games and a ‘Responsibility of Commanders' document belonging to Chase. The second album holds thirty-two photos spanning from 1941-1942 in North Carolina and Washington. The photos feature several fantastic images of tanks working their way through training operations, army camps, men studying a map, and a dog bearing a racist name. Like the first, this album also contains newspaper clippings covering the war, mileage ration forms, documents stating Chase's relief of duty due to physical disability, and a document appointing Chase to the temporary position of major. The third album mainly focuses on his time spent at Fort Dix in New Jersey, although some photos are from Virginia, South Carolina, and North Carolina, including army convoys, army camps, the ‘chow line', men shaving, training on the field with guns and out working through different maneuvers. The album includes a newspaper clipping from the ‘Stars and Stripes' on a humorous Russian impersonation done by an American soldier at the 44th Division CP. The fourth album is filled with photos of Chase and his wife in Washington, including their home, scenic places they have traveled such as Mt. Rainier, Ashford General Hospital where Chase recuperated from his injuries, and more. This album was once bound in white leather but the boards have separated; WITH an 8 x 10 in. b/w photo of Chase and the other men from the 2nd battalion 114th infantry at Fort Lewis from Aug. 28, 1943, and an Ashford Hospital informational booklet. Overall, these albums are in very good condition; WITH a large grouping of personal documents belonging to or relating to Chase throughout his life post-war, including a Presidential Memorial Certificate, 1p. 4to., posthumously honoring Chase for his service in the armed forces, a b/w army photograph of Chase from the chest up, and a folder containing over a hundred documents and letters pertaining to Chase such as army records, hospital records, an appeal for promotion from captain to major, correspondence with Veterans Administration and the Army office regarding injuries, retirement, training, etc., newspaper clippings, letters from friends, and more.
