Description:

(AMERICAN REVOLUTION)
A fine collection of five manuscript Ds.S. 1p. ea., 8vo. & 4to., Holden, [Mass.], three dated July 5 1779 and the balance dated June 26, 1780, all being receipts for funds "to hire … men to Reinforce the Continental army…" Each of the documents are promissory notes issued to different creditors to the town including Josiah Stratton, Israel Davis, Moses Smith, and Isaiah Brown. In 1779 the State of Massachusetts demanded that the town of Holden furnish five men for Continental service of nine months. By the following year ten men were required (and no duration of service was mentioned this time around!). All five pieces bear the usual folds, some reinforced with tape on verso, some minor marginal wear and toning, overall very good.
