Description:

AMERICAN PROTECTIVE LEAGUE EPHEMERA
Good lot of nine letters, documents, and articles of ephemera, all related to the American Protective League, an organization of private citizens that worked with Federal law enforcement agencies during World War I to identify suspected German sympathizers and anti-war activists. Each piece appears to be related to APL member Charles A. Connell, and the articles presented include: Connell's signed APL membership card; an APL certificate of service honoring Connell; a T.L.S., 1p. 4to., Philadelphia, Aug. 13, 1918, informing Connell that he has been recommended for membership in the APL; three additional letters from the Department of Justice and the APL, including one announcing the dissolution of the APL due to the end of the war; an APL banquet registration card; an informational brochure; and a program from the League's final banquet on the event of their dissolution. All are very good, should be seen. Also present are five articles of ephemera related to the Friends of German Democracy, an American propaganda group which produced pro-democracy leaflets to be distributed by American soldiers in occupied areas. These include a membership application slip, a brochure offering a short history of the organization, and examples of three such leaflets, one in English, and two in German. All very good. Fourteen pieces overall.
