Description:

Visually striking original World War II propaganda poster, 28 ¼" x 38", a jarring view of a man in manacles against a brick wall with a sack hood over his head. Superimposed over this figure is the title "This is Nazi Brutality", over a subtitle is the style of a news wire bulletin: "Radio Berlin " It is officially announced: All men of Lidice " Czechoslovakia " have been shot: The women deported to a concentration camp: The children sent to appropriate centers " The name of the village was immediately abolished. 6/11/42/115P". This references the Lidice massacre, in which the inhabitants of the village were executed and deported, and the village completely destroyed in reprisal for the assassination of Reich Protector of Bohemia and Moravia Reinhard Heydrich by Czech commandos. The printed signature of artist Ben Shahn appears at lower right, with a publishing line at the bottom edge indicating that the poster was released by the Office of War Information in 1942. Shows original mailing folds, mounted in a black metal frame, very good overall.
