Includes: JAMES HARLAN (1820-1899) American politician, Secretary of the Interior and an intimate friend of Abraham Lincoln. Manuscript L.S. 1p. 4to., Washington, July 9, 1866, on his official letterhead to an autograph seeker who desires signatures of Caleb B. Smith and John P. Usher, and regretting his ability to help secure them. WITH: THOMAS HART BENTON (1782-1858) Senator from Missouri and architect of the expansionist doctrine Manifest Destiny. Postal cover addressed and franked in his hand. With black wax seal on verso, very good. WITH: JOHN CONNESS (1821-1909) Irish-born Senator during the Civil War, an abolitionist who helped establish Yosemite Park. War-date A.L.S. 1p. 8vo., Washington, Dec. 19, 1863, to Senator Harris, sending a signed photograph (not included). Mounting traces to verso. WITH: HENRY CABOT LODGE (1850-1924) American politician and senator, led opposition to the Peace Treaty and the Covenant of the League of Nations. A.L.S. 1p. 8vo., Nahant, MA, Sept. 4, 1894, sending a letter (not included). Fine. WITH: JOHN J. CRITTENDEN (1787-1863) Senator and Governor of Kentucky. Signature adding ‘U.S. Senate', penned on a small yellow slip. Mounted, very good. WITH: HENRY G. DAVIS (1823-1916) Senator for West Virginia and VP nominee. Signature on a small card, very good. WITH: THOMAS HALE SILL (1783-1856), Member of Congress for Pennsylvania. Manuscript L.S. 2pp. 4to., Washington, Apr. 26, 1826, to Secretary of the Navy Samuel L. Southard recommending a colonel, signed at conclusion along with ROBERT ORR, JR. (1786-1876) and two others. Toning, otherwise very good. WITH: FRANCIS E. SPINNER (1802-1890) Treasurer of the United States under three presidents, commencing with Abraham Lincoln. Bold signature on a small yellow sheet adding ‘Mohawk, N.Y.'. Show-through above signature from tape remains on verso, not affecting it. WITH: ROSCOE CONKLING (1829-1888) American politician, a rival of Blaine, Hayes, and Garfield who forced Conkling to resign as senator over issues of patronage. Concluding page of a letter, 1p. 8vo., in full: ‘on his statement and I beg your attention to it. Yr obt servt Roscoe Conkling'. Pen docket beneath signature, pencil docketing at bottom, good condition. WITH: RUFUS CHOATE (1799-1859) American lawyer and Member of Congress, remembered for his powerful oration. A.L.S. 1p. 4to., Washington, June 25, 1841, regretting an invitation. Wrinkling, dampstaining at bottom lightly affecting signature, and foxing. Still good condition. WITH: ANDREW P. BUTLER (1796-1857) Senator from South Carolina, remembered for once nearly caning abolitionist Charles Sumner to death on the Senate floor for the latter's insult. Franking signature on a small slip taken from a postal cover. Fine. WITH: CORNELIUS COLE (1822-1924) American politician who served one term as Congressman and Senator for California, respectively. A.L.S. 2pp. 4to., Los Angeles, Jan. 18, 1913, sending a gentleman biographical details of a number of individuals. Fine.
