Description:

A very interesting signed D-Day relic, a miniature parachute, approx. 9 in. dia. with 20 in. long cords, constructed of pale green cotton, bearing the stamped designation "A119/416". The parachute is signed in ink by eighteen American paratroopers in ink, with many adding their state of origin ("Mississippi", "Wiss", etc.) The designation "Plane #2" and the date "June 5, 1944" are also present, indicating that these men were among those who parachuted into Normandy shortly after midnight on June 6 as part of Operation Overlord. The parachute is housed in a vintage wood display case with a sliding plexiglass lid, allowing the parachute to be removed, along with a typed informational tag in French, reading: "Tomorrow, we liberate Europe' To mark the long-awaited event, they all affix their signatures on a small parachute. At the top, they have written the date of 5th June 1944 and the number of the plane that will take off in a few hours for Normandy". The name of a well-known American collector is noted at the conclusion, suggesting that he presented this relic to a French museum or collection. The parachute itself shows notable rust stains and resultant holes, with minor fading to the signatures, else very good.
