Description:

AMERICAN OCCUPATION OF BAVARIAN GROUPING
A large and important grouping of material concerning the American administration of post-war Bavaria, most generated under the auspices of Military Governors Gen. George H. Patton and Walter J. Muller before and during their tenure in that position. A wealth on information is contained within these dozens of charts, documents, reports, etc., many of which are marked as 'Restricted'. Included are two sets of five bound maps each, in wrappers with English and German titles: 'RESTRICTED Administrative Maps Land Bayern General Administration', prepared by the OSS in April, 1945, with the maps showing the various political boundaries and seats of government within the state. Also present: a Third Army May 1, 1945 map showing the disposition of machine gun units in Bavaria; a map of zones of occupation; two maps showing the lengths of borders between American and foreign zones of occupation; a large overlay chart showing the percentage of air raid damage of various locations in Munich (multiple tears, very fragile); a blueprint map of 'Number of Totally Destroyed Rural Buildings'; a map of 'No. of Destroyed Dwellings'; a map of the 'Reconstruction Plan for Housing'; a map showing the Bavarian 'Housing Situation'; chart of a hand-colored map of Bavaria showing showing land offices most in need of staffing; a map of 'Control Points' in Bavaria; photographs of maps showing population Bavarian density, changes, and housing density in 1948; Office of Land Commissioner flow charts; three additional Bavaria land office maps of the region's political subdivisions; war-date issue topographical maps of Nuremberg (2), 36 x 26 in. and Munich, 29 x 24 in., and Heidelburg; 1946 'Statistical News' on Bavaria including population changes, cost of living, refugees, hospitals, prices, etc.; a November, 1948 report issued by the occupation government 134pp. legal folio, following a seminar in Nuremberg; approx. sixty blank sheets of official letterhead from the American military and other occupation offices in Bavaria; and much more. Of special interest is a 35 x 23 in. map centered on the Nazi parade grounds in Nuremberg. The hand-colored and amended map places an aircraft runway exactly on the wide boulevard at the open end of the Deutsche Stadion rally grounds which also separates the stadium from the second stadium and old zeppelin stadium. It appears that the old grounds once used for Nazi Party Day rallies would be leveled for the new airport. There is also a substantial file of maps and documents concerning concerning the American proposal to construct apartment buildings by the Germans who would rent units to American airmen. Some of the maps and charts are dampstained or toned, overall very good.
