Description:

Clearly vintage and very rare bicorn hat supposedly belonging to the 'Honorable Artillery Company' ,approx. 14. in wide x 6 in. tall., bearing a red plume at top and wrapped in black beaver felt. The front side bears an affixed black bow with a brass monogram at center, appearing to show the initials 'AHA' though this is disputable. The interior is lined with a purple paper lining, though the bottom half is badly damaged. One side of the lining bears an a sticker with the hand-inked identification 'Cadet Veterans'. Paper loss to the lining beneath this has revealed an ink marking on the wall of the hat, once concealed by the lining, reading '67', potentially indicative of the size. Sweatband is absent. The top bears a printed manufacturer's mark from the Bent & Rush company in Boston, as well as a size sticker of '6 7/8'. Undated, though bicornes were widely adopted in 1790s for American military and naval officers and largely ceased after World War I. A small paper tag near the rim bears the surname 'COOK'. The hat is significantly cracked at spots, much of the black exterior is flaking off. Sold as is due to condition, yet still a nice display piece.
