Description:

Fascinating pre-World War II photo album, 48pp. oblong 4to. containing more than 200 b/w photographs, snapshots and photo postcards, the majority depicting the pacific voyage of an American merchant seaman aboard the passenger/cargo ship SS President Quezon, formerly the President Madison. The majority of the images appear to have been taken or collected in China, Hong Kong and the Philippines, and include many views of the President Madison and other warships and merchant vessels at sea and in port; Japanese women in traditional clothing; street scenes in japan, Hong Kong, China and Manila; portraits of the ship's Filipino crew; a crew member's pet tiger cub and puppies; and more. Of particular interest are two photo postcards, each 5 ¼" x 31/2" b/w, depicting an execution in the Philippines, the first showing the executioner beheading the prisoner (with arterial blood spray added in the negative for effect), and the second showing the prisoner's dismembered corpse following the act. Two photos signed by professional boxer Joe Miller and dedicated to "Carl" - likely the compiler of this album - are also present. The final fifty or so photos consist of family portraits and views from a logging camp in the Pacific Northwest. Two newspaper clippings present with the album indicate that the President Quezon sank in 1940 after striking a reef off Japan, and that an assistant cook from Seattle perished in the accident. It is possible that this drowned man was the owner of this album. The covers show heavy wear, with the front cover detached and mended with masking tape, still an interesting view of the region.
