Fine lot of twenty signed items by American fighter aces. Includes signed photos, some of which are inscribed, featuring JAMES L. PEARCE, LOUIS E. CURDES, MICHAEL J. QUIRK, MERLE M. COONS, EDWARD G. WENDORF, and JOSEPH D. MCGRAW, each shown in the cockpit. Each photo also bears a short biography of the men and their accomplishments during wartime. Wendorf also signs a T.L.S., 2pp. 4to., [n.p.], April 4, 1970, detailing a ‘hit and run' attack on Kwajalein in 1943. McGraw also signs a second item, being another photo showing him leaned up against his plane. GORDON GRAHAM signs an 8 x 10 in. color photo of him getting into his plane. RALPH G. TAYLOR signs an 8 x 10 in. b/w photo, an advertisement featuring a sketch of the commander surrounded by several blurbs about his exploits. HOWARD V. LEE signs a first day postal cover, adding his rank and ‘Semper Fidelis', he also signs a copy of his citation awarding him the Medal of Honor. HERBERT H. BURR pens his signature on a card, 4.75 x 1 in. ROBERT H. DAVIS signs three items; an 8 x 10 in. b/w photo, featuring him in the cockpit. The photo also bears a short biography of his military accomplishments; WITH an A.N.S. on Little America letterhead, [n.p.], Mar. 26, 1996; WITH a six-page A.L.S., 4to., Arizona, May 8, 1974, describing a specific air battle; WITH the original holograph transmittal envelope. WALTER E. CLARKE also signs an 8 x 10 in. b/w photo, featuring him in the cockpit, the photo also bearing a short biography of his military accomplishments, and an A.L.S., 5pp. 4to., Arizona, Nov. 11, 1985, writing of his most interesting memory from World War II. LOUIS W. CHICK JR. signs a T.L.S., 2pp. 4to., California, Dec. 30, 1967, in which he reminisces about his most interesting experience as a combat pilot. GEORGE S. WELCH signs a war-date A.N.S. on Hotel DuPont letterhead, 4.5 x 3.5 in., Wilmington, June 7, 1942, the holograph envelope is included. Accompanying this lot is an 8 x 10 in. b/w photo of CURTIS LEMAY and the President of Bendix presenting the Bendix trophy to the winning pilot. Conditions vary, overall, very good.
