Description:

Two-sided German issued propaganda leaflet, 2pp. 4to., titled ‘HOW HE KEPT HIS WORD!' and showing an image at the center of American and British prisoners enjoying a Christmas dinner. Reading in part: ‘General Montgomery took a mouthful when he declared on Dec. 12th that he would reach Rome in time to celebrate Xmas. How well his offensive was stopped with heavy losses for your forces, you know yourself best...the German Commandant of Rome, having a weakness for General Montgomery, decided to lend him a helping hand...American and British soldiers did after all celebrate Xmas in Rome – not as conquering heroes, though, but as prisoners of war...They are treated fairly and squarely...They are housed in sanitary camps. They are well-treated...And what's this war going to get you?!' The verso is titled ‘Xmas in Rome' and bears three images of the soldiers invited to celebrate the holiday happily eating and drinking. The accompanying text reads in part: ‘...private George Eastburn...and 150 American and British soldiers entered the festively decorated dining room of a fashionable midtown hotel in Rome...In the middle of the room a Xmas tree...a band was playing their favoured tunes...Look in what joyful mood they were after Santa Claus had visited them and left each one a large plate laden with cake and biscuits, apples and oranges, canned meat, condensed milk, and cigarettes...And did the boys appreciate it!...' Light chipping and spotting, else very good.
