AMERICAN ‘WERWOLF' INTELLIGENCE REPORT
A great content typed U.S. Army intelligence report, 2pp. legal folio., [n.p., likely somewhere in Germany], May 6, 1945, marked 'Secret' multiple times throughout, describing a series of events. In part: 'On the night of 4 May, a patrol...entered the town of Brunsdorf...they were met by many wild-eyed citizens who reported that 'some' SS troops were raising havoc in the town...Next morning the patrol returned and were met by 3 SS troops...who fired at the approaching tanks. Return fire from the tanks resulted in the death of the 3 SS'ers... At 1800 tonight all was quiet and peaceful...suddenly a shot was fired...the guard turned around, a civilian was seen to flee into the woods...This incident will not be the last of its kind...All personnel must be cautioned to be on the alert at all times. The WEREWOLF was not included in the Unconditional Surrender terms...They will continue to harass our every move despite instructions issued by Admiral Doenitz...Two CIC men driving down a road near Ober Roslau...observed a pushcart and stout walking shoe group of six men...They all seemed younger than the standard brand of refugee...on the pushcart was a paper mache suitcase...One of the CIC men asked who owned the suitcase, whereupon such an appalled silence and freezing horror came over the six civilians...The oldest civilian...seemed to be fixing for a break so the CIC men...started to handcuff him....the civilian made a lunge toward one of the CIC men...in the ensuing scuffle he was shot dead...he was found to have the SS blood type mark tattooed on his upper arm...it was found that the brown paper suitcase contained enough explosives, detonators, time pencils, and hand grenades to supply a Central American Revolution...' Much more. Toned, else fine condition. 'Werewolf' refers to the Nazi plan ‘Werwolf" which hoped to create a resistance which would operate behind enemy lines as the Allies advanced through Germany. The extent to which the plan was successful is heavily debated, as some historians believe many of the actions associated with the 'Werewolf' were misconstrued as propaganda created by Joseph Goebbels.
