Description:

AMERICA'S FIRST SERIAL KILLER IS GIVEN A PUBLIC DEFENDER
ALBERT FISH (1870 - 1936) American serial killer, child rapist and cannibal who boasted that he "had children in every state", and at one time stated the number was about 100. He was a suspect in at least five murders during his lifetime and confessed to three murders that police were able to trace to a known homicide. Fish was finally put on trial for the kidnapping and murder of Grace Budd, and was convicted and executed by electric chair. Important D.S. signed by Judge William P. Bleakley, 1p legal folio, White Plains, NY, Feb. 6, 1935. Bleakley appoints a public defender to represent the notorious murderer in court. In part: "...Albert H. Fish is without counsel for his defense to the indictment charging him with the crime of murder in the first degree...he is without means or property...ORDERED that James Dempsey, Jr....is assigned as counsel...". Fine. Fish's pleaded insanity, without success, being found guilty after ten days. He was recorded to have said that electrocution would be "the supreme thrill of my life". Just before the switch was flipped, he stated "I don't even know why I am here." Legend has it that his execution took longer due to the numerous needles inserted into his privates which disrupted the flow of electricity.
