Description:

AMBROTYPE OF A CHEROKEE WOMAN
A fine 1/6th plate ambrotype showing a well-dressed older Cherokee woman in elaborated Western dress. Contained within a felt case with pencil note inside reading: "Sarah wife of great uncle Thomas Dowd Cherokee from Cartersville 1859". The town of Cartersville is in Northwest Georgia in Bartow County. Obviously Thomas Dowd escaped the "Trail of Tears" of the Cherokees in the early 1830s and settled on private lands. Although a huge number of Cherokees were forced west to Oklahoma, groups were allowed to remain in the East, living on private rather than tribal lands. By the time of this photograph, Cherokees had become quite assimilated with the lifestyle and dress of the Whites and Sarah Dowd's elaborate dress attests to this. Housed in original painted wood frame (cover detached and missing). Light spotting to edges of image, frame worn, else very good condition.
