AMBROSE BURNSIDE AND JAMES H. LEDLIE
JAMES H. LEDLIE (1832 – 1882) Union brigadier general best known for his dereliction of duty at the Battle of the Crater during the Siege of Petersburg. Ledlie did not brief his troops beforehand and they entered the crater out of curiosity instead of moving safely around its rim, resulting in a slaughter. Meantime, Ledlie sat behind the lines in a drunken stupor. War-date L.S. just months before the Battle of the Crater, 1p. 4to. on Head Quarters Veterans Brigade letterhead, Albany, Mar. 3, 1864 to Brig. Gen. Lorenzo Thomas asking that 1st Lt. Samuel B. Tobey be appointed Assistant Quartermaster with the rank of captain. On the verso appears an A.E.S. by Major Gen. AMBROSE E. BURNSIDE (1824-1881), known for the disastrous charges made at Fredericksburg in 1862. Burnside notes: 'I certainly join in the within recommendation and hope the appointment will be made...' Expertly inlaid, very good.
