Description:

(1892-1951) South African aviation pioneer who joined the RFC as a pilot, in 1915. He fought in the skies over the Western Front in France and Belgium, and during 191617 he returned to South Africa on recruiting tours for the RFC. He recruited more than 8,000 volunteers, of whom 2,000 were accepted, most of them as pilots. They were known collectively as "Miller's Boys". Scarce war-date signature as squadron commander, cut from a document. Fine. WITH: a humorous T.L.S., 1p. 4to., [South Africa. n.d.], to Miller, signed by Gen. GEORGE HENRY FOWKE (18641936) who served on the staff of the British Expeditionary Force during the First World War, and by Gen. [GEOFFREY?] BARTON chastising Miller for failing to forward greetings upon his departure, presumably for England and the war, and appointing him a "Companion of the 23rd Class of the Order of the Most Egregious Ping-Pong". Very good.
