Description:

ALLIED CONFERENCES PHOTO ALBUM
UNPUBLISHED PHOTOS OF THE ALLIED LEADERS A truly unique historical object, a bound album, 72pp. folio, containing 140 photographs depicting the historic meetings between Allied heads of state and military leaders, most at the conferences at Quebec, Yalta, Potsdam, Cairo, and Tehran. The album was prepared by M/Sgt. Horace M. Curtis, Chief of the Printing Division and Reproduction Branch of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). Curtis was responsible for supervising the printing of the documents used at the five conferences, and also for creating a series of photo albums documenting the meetings, which were to be given as gifts to the participating heads of state. Recipients included president HARRY S. TRUMAN, whose album resides in the Library of Congress, WINSTON CHURCHILL, JOSEF STALIN, CHIANG KAI-SHEK, HAILE SELASSIE, CHARLES DE GAULLE, and others. Curtis also prepared an extra copy for himself, which is offered for sale here. The dark maroon cover bears Curtis' name in gold lettering, and features multiple black ink notations within, identifying figures in the photographs. The album includes views of the Joint Chiefs of Staff meeting with their British, French, and Russian counterparts; twenty-three images from the Quebec conference, including views of Churchill, President FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT, and Canadian Prime Minister MACKENZIE KING; fourteen images of the meetings in Cairo and Tehran between Churchill, Roosevelt, and Stalin; eight images from the Yalta conference; seven images from meetings between Roosevelt, Haile Selassie, IBN SUAD of Saudi Arabia, and KING FAROUK I of Egypt aboard the cruiser U.S.S. Augusta; and 58 images depicting the Potsdam Conference, at which the Allies gathered to decide how best to administer a recently-surrendered Germany. The Potsdam photos in particular are comprised mostly of candid, unposed photographs, and bear extensive notations explaining the people portrayed and the setting. Also present are several photographs depicting generals Marshall, Arnold and Eisenhower inspecting the beaches of Normandy shortly after Operation Overlord in June, 1944. Needless to say, many of the photographs presented here are otherwise unknown and unpublished. Also included is a copy of Curtis' commendation letter for his role in printing the conference documents. Many of the photographs bear minor discoloration from long storage, else very good.
