Description:

ALICE B. TOKLAS
(1877 - 1967) American ex-patriot writer, best known as the lifetime companion of Gertrude Stein. She garnered attention for her own work, The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas (1933), ironically, actually Stein's memoirs. Scarce A.L.S. 1p. 8vo., Paris, Jan. 21, 1954, penned in her precise, minute hand to the Surrealist poet David Gascogne, in part: "...It was indeed Miss Sprigg who suggested you should come here and it is kind of you to say you will. To give you time to do so - if you enjoy pictures you shall have your reward. Otherwise there is nothing to offer you except a cup of China tea. If you are free next Sunday...woudl you care to come...Perhaps you would be kind enough to let me know...". Upon the death of Gertrude Stein Toklas would publish, the year of this letter, her own memoirs entitled The Alice B. Toklas Cookbook. Fine.
