Description:

ALFRED WUNNENBERG
(1891 - 1963) German Waffen-SS general, fought in the French and Russian campaigns in the 18th Army, later replaced Kurt Daluege as head of all German police. Awarded the Knights Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds. Exceptionally rare, fine association war-date D.S. signed twice, 3pp. sm. folio, [n.p.], May 11, 1942, a "Recommendation for the Award of the German Cross in Gold" to Gen. FRITZ FREITAG, Commander of the Division SS "Galizien". The division was made up of Ukrainian volunteers and took enormous losses resisting Konev near Brody. Freitag is cited for his valiant defense in the area of Mosstki, with two Russian attacks beaten back and followed by similar counter-attacks against far superior forces. Signed on first page and at conclusion, file holes and light toning, else very good.
