Description:

ALFRED SISLEY
(1839 - 1899) French painter, a creator of French Impressionism closely tied to Monet, Renoir and Bazille. Scarce and important A.L.S., 2pp. sm. 8vo., "Moret sur Loing", Jan. 15, 1897, to an unknown correspondent, in part: "...It will be best to send the pictures as soon as possible to G[eorges] Petit, 12 rue Godot de Mauroi. He is better placed than anyone else to find what is needed. I am seeing him tomorrow and I return to Paris the following week. It will be very surprising if I do not find frames for those sizes. Thank you for your readiness in obliging me...". Georges Petit was a well-known and respected art dealer in Paris who showcased many important Impressionist artists such as Monet, Rodin and Renoir. This was to be Sisley's last hope to resurrect his flagging career. He had been earnestly looking forward to Petit's retrospective exposition, for which he had selected his best pictures, and here is ordering them forwarded to the gallery. The show was a failure, and Sisley soon moved to southern France and into relative obscurity. Fine condition.
