Alfred Pleasanton 1824-1897 Union major general who led the Cavalry Corps of the Army of the Potomac. Fine content war date A.L.S. 2pp. 8vo. on Headquarters, Army of the Potomac letterhead, Nov. 7, 1863 In support of Meade's bloody assault to cut off Lee at Kelly's Ford, Pleasanton sends orders to Brig. General Hugh Judson Kilpatrick 1836-81 to cross the Rappahannock. In part: Send an aide to Gen. Kilpatrick to cross at Ellis Ford with his command at daylight, then cross Mountain Run and connect with Gen. [William H.] French to whose command he will for the present belong. Headquarters here are ordered to be ready by daylight. I shall stay here all night, send my bay horse over by that time he adds an initialed postscript instructing that mess kits and bedding be prepared to take on the advance. Moderate purple dye staining across letter, yet text remains fully legible.
