(1835 - 1880) Union general who led a division of Pleasonton's cavalry. Uncommon war-date A.L.S. "A.N. Duffie C[ommand]ing / 1st Cav. Brig. General Averell's Div. Stonmans Corps." 1p. 4to. "Head Quarters Cav. Brigade 2d Dn.", Feb. 25, 1863, to General Ed C. Murray. Duffie, having just been promoted to Brigade commander, relates: "...Having received the Command of a Cavalry Brigade, I have the honor to inform you that I have turned over to Lt. Col. Thompson of the 1st R.I. Cav. the Command of my much loved regt. In parting with my Regt in which I have much regret I assure you. I shall try all in my power to do all for its welfare, my cares for it shall be the same and hereafter I hope I shall not have any trouble to get for it where it wants being placed under my Command...". Expertly inlaid, near fine condition.
