(1827-1890) Union brigadier general at the First Bull Run, Petersburg and Richmond, he was also commander of the expedition leading to George Custer's death at the Little Big Horn. Good content war-date A.L.S. "Alfred H. Terry' as brevet major general, 1p. 4to., "Near Richmond", Oct. 5, 1864 to Capt. S. Atwill commanding the 7th Conn. Vols. Terry writes, n part: "...I cannot rest satisfied until I have expressed to you the very great gratification which I feel at the manner in which you have brought your regiment out of the unfortunate condition into which it fell...and also for the able and gallant manner in which you handled the late reconnaissance toward Richmond. You know how much at heart I have the welfare and reputation of my old regiment...I esteem your personal character and military ability..." Extremely light toning, else fine condition.
