Description:

ALFRED DREYFUS
(1859 - 1935) French Jewish military officer convicted and cleared of treason in a case which convulsed political life from 1894-1899. Fine association A.L.S. 1p. sm. 8vo., [n.p., n.d. but docketed 1907 in another hand], in French to Emilie Aubert Zola, wife of the great French author and ardent Dreyfusard Emile Zola. Addressing her as: "Cher Madame et ami", Dreyfus thanks her for sending him the volumes of Zola's correspondence, which she collected after his death. Zola's role in the resolution of the infamous Dreyfus case of 1897 is well-known; his proclamation "J'Accuse" was a major turning point in the Affair, but it brought ignominy to its author, who was arrested for criminel libel. Zola fled for England rather than face imprisonment, returning to his country only after the fall of the government in 1899. Very good condition.
