Description:

ALEXANDER SHALER
(1827-1911) Union brigadier general captured at the Wilderness and held hostage under the guns during the bombardment of Charleston. War-date A.L.S. twice signed, 3pp. 4to., ‘Headquarters 1st U.S. Chasseurs Near Point of Rocks, Maryland', Sep. 13, 1862, to New York Adj. Gen. Hillhouse. Shaler sends a list of the officers of his regiment, mentioning that some commissions had not yet been received, adding ‘...the issue of commissions...is earnestly requested at your earliest convenience...'. Shaler then lists the name, rank, company and date of commission of various officers of the 65th reg. N.Y. Vols., including staff, chaplains, lieutenants, and so on. Signed at the conclusion of his letter and again beneath his list. Also endorsed by Union Brigadier General JOHN COCHRANE (1813-1898) who fought at Fredericksburg and Antietam, who adds a two-line A.E.S. Also bears a fifteen-line A.E.S. by Union Major General DARIUS COUCH (1822-1897), a Fredericksburg and Antietam veteran. Couch mentions that officers named ‘...are a tried and faithful body who have done honor to their state and country – And I trust the Governor [will] give at his earliest opportunity that which is their due...'. Light toning and some tears at the folds, otherwise very good.
