Description:

ALEXANDER P. BUTTERFIELD
(b. 1926) Deputy assistant to President Nixon from 1969-1973. He revealed the existence of the White House taping system during the Watergate investigation but had no other involvement. A.L.S., 4pp. 4to., San Diego, CA., Dec. 8, 1992, sharing his thoughts on President Nixon and Watergate to assist in a research report. In part: ‘...the 20th anniversary of the WG break-in...the papers out here were full of the subject – as was the TV; and I must have received 20 calls from reporters...I agree with you that it is a shame the American people have such short memories...where RN and his crimes and abuses of power are concerned, it seems that none remember the disgrace he brought to the office and the dishonor he brought on himself...we should not allow him to come back into our good graces...he should be accorded no honors or titles or special positions in government...As to the matter of the break-in itself, and who actually authorized it, you must believe me when I say he did, he and Haldeman...no way...anyone else would have dared to give the green light...if Haldeman knew, the president knew. That, incidentally, is what the ‘18 ½ minute gap' is all about...I have no proof of this. No one does. But my desk was only 20 feet from the president's desk, and I knew as well as anyone how the system worked...and I'd bet a bundle that that's precisely how it went...It's my understanding that when the deal was struck about a pardon for Richard Nixon...Ford was already VP...'. He concludes this letter firmly stating that he had no part in Watergate other than his testimony and was one of the ‘goodies' and he doubles-down on his belief that the pardon of Nixon was a mistake. Signed at the conclusion. Fine.
