Description:

ALEXANDER II
(1818 - 1881) Emperor of Russia responsible for the emancipation of the serfs, and made important contributions to the reform of the judiciary, economy and educational systems. Manuscript L.S. "Aleksandr" as Tsar, 2pp. 4to., Moscow, Sept. 8, 1856. Early in his reign and during the year in which Alexander signed the Treaty of Paris that ended the Crimean War, he makes provisions for the welfare of an unnamed but valuable "Commander-in-chief" (thought to be Alexander Sergeyevich Menshikov). In part: "...On considering the necessity that you should be treated for a disease...I express my consent to grant you a one-year pay leave to go abroad. Also, in order to gratify your other wish, I have discharged you by an order, issued today from your duty as the Commander-in-chief of the Second Army, retaining you in the rank of My general-adjutant. I appreciate your useful service...". Alexander Menshikov was the great-grandson of the noted field marshal who served Peter the Great and Catharine the Great. Light soiling to lower margin, very good.
