Description:

(ALEXANDER HAMILTON)
Superb association, partly-printed D.S. by GOUVERNEUR MORRIS ("Gouv Morris"), RUFUS KING ("R King"), OLIVER WOLCOTT ("Oliv Wolcott"), together with EGBERT BENSON ("Egbt. Benson"), and CHARLES WILKES ("Chas Wilkes"), 1p. 8vo., New York, Nov. 29, 1804 being a certificate for a share in the trust of the estate of Alexander Hamilton, who had been killed in a duel with Aaron Burr on July 11, 1804. After Hamilton's death, his debts were such that his creditors demanded a forced sale of his assets. In response, Hamilton's friends and associates formed a trust to pay off the estate's debts and provide for his family. The document reads, in full: "Certificate to Rufus King for a Share in the Trust intended in a certain Writing of this date, relative to the Estate of Alexander Hamilton, deceased; and this Certificate to be assignable, and to be receivable on Sales of the Estate by the Trustees, as a payment of Two Hundred Dollars: the Dividends, however, if any, which may have been paid on the Share, being first deducted". This particular certificate was made out to Rufus King, one of the trustees and is numbered 145. A wonderful association piece: Gouverneur Morris delivered the eulogy at Hamilton's funeral; Rufus King was a fellow signer of the Constitution (as was Morris); and Charles Wilkes was the president of the Bank of New York, for which Hamilton served as counsel. One horizontal fold, else fine condition. Matted and framed with portraits of Hamilton and King.
